Project News July 2003

The main contractor is Wallis Special Projects of Bromley. The contract runs for seventy weeks and is due to finish by summer 2004. We are very grateful to the many people who are already supporting the restoration and we would like to thank you very much indeed. The current programme of work is made possible by a second large grant of £ 3.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. But to take full advantage of this grant we must provide matching funds. We still need to raise £250,000 matching funds and urgently. We do need help. Your contribution is warmly appreciated. donate online

The week beginning 21st July sees the start of some re-levelling works involving the breaking up of concrete in the yard between the Church and the Rectory on Fournier Street. This is expected to last about six weeks with the first two weeks being the noisiest. This has been programmed to coincide with Christ Church Primary School’s holidays as during the term time this area provides its emergency exit.

We apologize for the inconvenience and disturbance that this will cause but do hope that you will bear with us as we progress with the restoration of this important historic church.

The other main works being carried out this summer include:

• Scaffolding to nave – 7 storeys high
• Brick stone and plaster repairs to nave and aisles and other areas of the church
• Cleaning columns and capitals
• Installation of trusses to strengthen the roof
• Installation of electrical services and under-floor heating in the nave and aisles.
• Installation of services in boiler room under west steps
